Wellington’s location at the centre of New Zealand won Wellington the role of capital in 1865. Today, Parliament and the Beehive building alongside it are national icons. Wellington is approximately 8½ hours from Auckland by road, about an hour by air. The South Island is a three-hour scenic ferry ride away across Cook Strait.
Wellington itself is built on dramatic hills surrounding one of the southern hemisphere’s largest deep water ports. The Wellington region takes up the southern end of the North Island. Most people here live in the four cities at the south western corner - Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua. The Wellington region consists also of the Kapiti and Wairarapa regions. For now, the region has 3 separate District Health Boards: Capital and Coast, Wairarapa and Hutt Valley; although they work together to form 3DHB.
We are looking for a consultant psychiatrist with forensic experience who is comfortable taking on a senior role. This appointment is a full time position based in Whanganui as the work is spread over Whanganui Forensic Community Mental Health Team and Stanford House
You will work in a multidisciplinary team setting, providing high quality diagnosis, and treatment and follow up of mental health consumers and supporting the medical and psychiatric development of this service. You will be responsible for providing input to the extended term secure regional forensic inpatient service at Stanford House, regular prison clinics at Whanganui prison and follow up of special patients in the community.
In addition you will provide court requested expert assessments and reports and may occasionally be required to attend court to give an expert opinion. Peer review, informal supervision and collegial support are also provided..
Capital and Coast DHB (CCDHB) is located centrally in Wellington and has the equivalent of around 4,300 full time staff, making us a major employer in the Wellington region. CCDHB operates two hospitals - Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua - as well as the Kapiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) spans three DHBs - Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast DHB's and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the 3DHB sub-region - greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa.
