The Bay of Plenty is a large basin stretching inland for nearly 260 kilometres (160 miles) of coast and almost continuous white sandy beaches. There are three main urban centres, all within about an hour’s drive of each other - Tauranga with a population of around 115,000, Rotorua (65,000) and Whakatane (33,000). The region is growing fast, particularly Tauranga which has grown by around 25% since 2001.
It was named in 1769 by Captain James Cook who found the people were generous and there were lots of fish, timber and other supplies. Tauranga is New Zealand’s fifth largest city. It sits right on the water’s edge and is well-known for its blue skies, warm climate, sparkling harbour and relaxed lifestyle.
In this role you will be working with a community mental health and addictions multidisciplinary clinical team, the acute inpatient unit at Whakatane Hospital and NGO and primary care providers. You will work with Whakatane and Tauranga clinicians in a number of cross-district service relationships that include general adult, consultation liaison, child and adolescent, addiction and mental health services for older people.
We are looking for a psychiatrist who has a passion for service development and an interest in education and research. There is opportunity to work with Auckland University Medical School students and Psychiatry Registrars. Full time and part time options can be considered.
This is a rare opportunity to work in the beautiful Eastern Bay of Plenty looking after a diverse population. The recent retirement of a Consultant Psychiatrist has created a vacancy in the Mental Health and Addiction Service based in Whakatane.
The community is vibrant and engaged and the surroundings spectacular with beautiful beaches and wilderness areas all close by to New Zealand's fastest growing city. There is outstanding access to diverse outdoor recreational opportunities and a wide-range of schooling options.
