We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist with special training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders that occur in older adults.  If you are motivated, forward thinking, resourceful, collaborative and have a passion for working with older adults this position could suit you.

The Service is predominantly a community based service with a 16 bed specialist inpatient unit.  The service works closely with other local and regional services within the region. They work as a multi-disciplinary team including nursing, medical, occupational therapy, clinical psychology, social work and support staff.

The service provides specialist assessment, treatment and rehabilitation interventions in partnership with clients, whanau, primary care and other agencies. The service primarily sees older adults presenting with mental health needs in later and older adults with complex behavioural and psychological needs secondary to a dementia process (BPSD).

There are some people referred with complex physical and mental health needs where co management across more than one specialty service maybe needed.  The service works in close collaboration with other service providers to identify the best ways of achieving this.

Working in New Zealand

New Zealand has a Multi-Employer Collective Agreement in place across all the District Health Boards and salaries are consistent based upon years of post-specialist experience. NZDr can provide you with all the details for this. 


Benefits include:

  • Base salary (NZ$164,000- $244,560) + allowances for job size, on call and availability.
  • 6 weeks annual leave
  • 2 weeks / $16,000 CME/CPD Allowance
  • Reimbursement of your practicing registration fees, college membership and indemnity insurance
  • Relocation packages vary with each DHB.
