Wellington’s location at the centre of New Zealand won Wellington the role of capital in 1865. Today, Parliament and the Beehive building alongside it are national icons. Wellington is approximately 8½ hours from Auckland by road, about an hour by air. The South Island is a three-hour scenic ferry ride away across Cook Strait.

Wellington itself is built on dramatic hills surrounding one of the southern hemisphere’s largest deep water ports. The Wellington region takes up the southern end of the North Island. Most people here live in the four cities at the south western corner - Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua. The Wellington region consists also of the Kapiti and Wairarapa regions. For now, the region has 3 separate District Health Boards: Capital and Coast, Wairarapa and Hutt Valley; although they work together to form 3DHB.

We are looking for a consultant psychiatrist with forensic expertise. The role sits in the central regional forensic service of the Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) 3DHBs and we are responsible for ensuring that all clinical steps necessary are taken to assist patients to achieve optimal health, wellbeing and safety through the provision of appropriate assessment, intervention and education.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing psychiatric input to regular prison clinics and following up a small number of special patients in the community.  In addition, they will provide court requested psychiatric reports and may occasionally be required to attend court to give an expert opinion.  Consultation liaison assessments will also be required.

The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team setting, providing diagnostic evaluation, risk assessment, treatment, monitoring and follow up of mental health consumers and supporting the medical and psychiatric development of the service. Peer review, informal supervision and collegial support will be provided on a two weekly basis at the Regional Forensic Service in Porirua.

Capital and Coast DHB (CCDHB) is located centrally in Wellington and has the equivalent of around 4,300 full time staff, making us a major employer in the Wellington region. CCDHB operates two hospitals - Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua - as well as the Kapiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) spans three DHBs - Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast DHB's and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the 3DHB sub-region - greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa.
