South Canterbury

Smaller hospital, bigger opportunities

South Canterbury runs from the port town of Timaru inland to the Mackenzie Country and Aoraki / Mount Cook.

Its hospital has one feature that matters more than its size suggests, and housing here goes further than the bigger centres.

Living in Timaru, the plains and the Mackenzie

Timaru sits on the coast south of Christchurch. A port city with Caroline Bay beach, a historic bluestone centre and a relaxed, friendly feel.

Inland the country climbs into the Mackenzie Basin, with Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Aoraki / Mount Cook behind them. The basin is known for its night skies.

Timaru Hospital, and why house officers look at it

Health New Zealand describes Timaru Hospital as a secondary hospital with a range of acute and elective services including medical, surgical, maternity, paediatric and mental health care. It's the main hospital for South Canterbury and has a secondary birthing unit.

Health New Zealand also notes that because there are no registrars at Timaru, house officers work with closer consultant contact and carry more responsibility.

That's unusual, and it matters. If you're early on and want direct consultant teaching rather than a place in a long training hierarchy, it's well worth a look.

The Kensington Centre opposite the hospital covers adult mental health and addiction.

Everyday life in South Canterbury

Housing here is among the most affordable in the South Island and work is a few minutes away.

The town has the schools, clubs and services a family needs, with the coast one way and the high country the other.

If you want to step away from city life without feeling truly remote, South Canterbury offers a useful middle ground.

The fuller picture

One hospital covers the district and tertiary work goes to Christchurch.

Timaru offers a relaxed pace of life, with Christchurch around two hours away for city amenities and international flights. Mt Dobson, Fox Peak and Roundhill ski fields are within easy reach in winter.

For consultants, working closely with house officers is part of the job, and many enjoy the teaching that comes with it.
