Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora is seeking a Rural Medicine Specialist to join the dedicated team at Taumarunui Hospital—a small, rural facility serving a close-knit community in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island. This is a unique opportunity to practise broad-scope medicine across emergency and inpatient settings, offering variety, with the support of an existing team. With the additional support to coordinate transfers to larger tertiary centres when needed. The role offers a rewarding mix of acute care, continuity, and community connection, ideal for a clinician who thrives in a generalist setting and a perfect opportunity to experience living in rural New Zealand.

Taumarunui offers a lifestyle that’s both peaceful and invigorating. Nestled in a scenic valley where two rivers meet, the town is surrounded by native bush, volcanic landscapes, and world-class outdoor recreation—from hiking the Tongariro Crossing to kayaking, fishing, and mountain biking. Just 45 minutes away lies Whakapapa Ski Area on Mt Ruapehu, one of New Zealand’s largest and most developed ski fields, offering everything from gentle learner slopes to thrilling alpine terrain. TÅ«roa Ski Field, also on Ruapehu, is about 90 minutes away and boasts the country’s highest lifted point and longest vertical descent. With short commutes, affordable living, and a welcoming community, Taumarunui is perfect for those seeking a slower pace without sacrificing professional challenge.
